Legalize Pineapple Pizza
Why is this an issue?
Pineapple pizza has grown into a topic that fuels raging conflicts on social media. Sometimes these conflicts escalate to threats of violence against each other. We can only hope that these threads are made in jest and that nobody would ever actually become violent over this issue.
But this isn't just limited to internet discussions. In February 2017, the prime minister of Iceland threatened a ban on pineapple pizza. Over a year later, he had finally apologized for the threat, stating that he "went too far". More importantly, he followed with "I do not have the power to make laws which forbid people to put pineapples on their pizza. I am glad that I do not hold such power. Presidents should not have unlimited power." This is absolutely true, but something that most people do not consider when they passionately take a position on one side of a polarized political argument and are willing to use the force of government against anyone who disagrees with them.
If the prime minister of a country is willing to joke about a completely immoral ban, I think it's important to ask how far that joke could have gone. Could it have been put on a ballot, even as a joke? Would people have checked that box, even as a joke? Could it have become law, even as a joke? And would that result in people being arrested or their rights violated, just as a joke? This seems like a ridiculous question to ask, but we have to remember that there are laws, even in the land of the free, that are still in effect today. Laws in Texas forbid a person from walking with an ice cream cone in their back pocket, and laws in California forbid throwing a frisbee or football on a public beach. Neither of these should be crimes if you are not interfering with anyone else.
This is why the pineapple pizza platform is so important to my campaign. Even as a joke, we must remember that even if we disagree with other people's preferences, we should not violently interfere with their life.
